The Magic of Shibori
1-hour talk
Explore the history, culture and production of both indigo dye and Shibori, a 1300-year-old Japanese hand-dyeing technique. This talk includes a slideshow with embedded video clips of the dying process, examples and discussion of inspiration and ideas for using Shibori fabrics. Sue’s presentation includes video clips demonstrating her process and a fun interactive activity to help attendees better understand a key aspect of Shibori techniques. Handouts with a list of resources and suggested reading are also provided.

Blue Fox Studio will bring Sue’s hand-dyed Shibori accessories and home goods to you! Sue creates a large variety of scarves and wraps, kimonos, tunics/cover ups, tote bags, linen table runners, pillow covers, youth/baby attire and more.
Workshop · $130 per student (includes all supplies and fabrics)
In this beginner friendly workshop, you’ll learn the art of Shibori, a Japanese manual hand-dyeing technique which produces beautiful patterns in fabric in a range of blues using Indigo dye. Four different patterns will be taught. You’ll choose two techniques to prep your fabrics. Dress for mess, as the dye will stain clothing. Minimum 6 students, maximum 12 students. Artist Bio
Sue Fox Mitrano is an artist who works in a variety of media. Currently she is creating Shibori textiles and wet felted pieces. Her hand-dyed scarves, accessories and home goods are made with traditional Shibori techniques as well as original designs. She has been sewing clothing and textiles since childhood and enjoys using these skills in her Shibori artistry.
Sue’s exploration in fiber arts also led her to discover Wet Felting about 10 years ago. This process of turning soft colorful wool into beautiful and sturdy felt further satisfies her love of texture and pattern. She creates vessels, wall hangings and scuptural pieces, often drawing inspiration from her extensive perennial gardens and landscapes found in her travels.
A native of West Windsor, NJ, Sue had a career as a graphic designer before becoming a certified K-12 art teacher. She holds a BFA from Syracuse University and a BA in Art Education from The College of New Jersey. She has taught in public and private schools as well as local art centers and studios.
