In this beginner friendly workshop, you’ll learn the art of Shibori, a Japanese manual hand-dyeing technique which produces beautiful patterns on fabric in a range of blues using Indigo dye.
In addition you will particpate in the Mill2Mill project, creating a small 9” flag with a Shibori pattern. The flags will join many other created at HAM in a celebration of American craft for our nation’s 250th anniversary. This project is part of Handwork 2026. The flags will be suspended across the river between the Hunterdon Art Museum and The Historic Red Mill in Clinton, NJ
Four different patterns will be taught - you’ll choose the techniques to prep your fabrics. Students may choose to create (in addition to the flag):
One 8"x72" silk scarf and One 11"x60" scarf OR
Two 18"x18" cotton pillow covers w/zippers OR
